Global mining giant BHP Billiton is teaming up with SaskPower to construct and manage a "Global Knowledge Centre."

Contract terms were not made available.

Minister Responsible for Saskatchewan Power Corporation as well as Energy and Resources Bill Boyd says Saskatchewan is a leader is carbon capture and they hope to share that.

"The whole purpose of this is to share the knowledge that SaskPower has gained through this CCS capture facility. We want to certainly make this information available to coal producing, electrical generation operations around the world."

The intention of the agreement is to allow SaskPower's expertise in capture, transport and storage be shared to the world, hence teaming with global company BHP.

"It will involve people from SaskPower, the people who made this project happen," President of BHP Canada Incorporated Giles Hellyer explained Thursday morning in Regina. "What we're doing is hoping to facilitate the transfer that knowledge and information in a way that SaskPower possibly can't do, it's not in their business."

No financial terms were released and early indication is the center will be build in Regina, where SaskPower headquarters are located.

SaskPower President of CCS Initiatives Mike Monea says they are open to share their knowledge as well as have ideas shared with them.

"SaskPower will really be able to demonstrate not only the construction side of the plant and what are next plant will look like, we are technology neutral. We're open for any different technology if someone wants to prove something to us, I think it's exciting."

Much of the knowledge to be shared has come from the construction and exceeded expectations of the Boundary Dam capture facility near Estevan which is the first of it's kind in the world.

Although no financial terms were released, it's said to be a "multi-million dollar deal" over several years. That announcement and the center's exact location can be expected in the coming months.
