As the global potash slump continues BHP Billiton has taken action and cut over 70 jobs in Saskatchewan.

Some other employees in other parts of Canada were also let go, they will leave their posts at times over the next six months.

Head of Corporate Affairs Chris Ryder said this isn't an ideal situation.

"It's a sad day when you have to announce something like that. I just want to say that I am very proud of the employees that we have including those 70 that have worked really hard to make sure we maintain Jansen as a great option for the company."

Although he did say "one or two" of his staff may lose their position.

Ryder says it's much more than the potash sector to blame for the cuts.

"Yeah it's pretty well across the board. Our major commodities are iron ore, copper, petroleum, both oil and gas and coal, all of the prices in those markets are depressed right now and that puts tremendous on our financial statements and our cash flow."

Ryder stressed that work is continuing at the BHP Jansen site. Surface work is complete at the site and now their focus is sinking and lining the mine shafts.

Ryder says BHP doesn't expect commodity prices to change significantly over the next year.
