Harvest season is the busiest time of the year, especially for farmers in Humboldt and the surrounding area.

Sometimes the pressure of completing harvest in time can be stressful for any farmer and sometimes can result in an injury. One of the most common ways get hurt while in the tractor or the combine can be a SHOCKING one at that. Power lines in a farmer's yard could make contact with equipment while being operated by a worker and could result in death.

"Unfortunately we have had about 9 people die over the course of the last 10 years, and that's not just farming related but that is power line contacts in general, it can be fatal and that's the bottom line," Said SaskPower Spokesperson Jordan Jackle.

Not only do power poll contacts take place during harvest, but also during seeding as well. Contacting a power poll doesn't just happen on the farm, it takes place all over Saskatchewan as a whole. Although farms are the most common area where contacting a power poll can take place for many reasons.

"Different pieces of equipment get bigger, the seeders are bigger, the combines are bigger. They are a little more difficult to navigate out there and that's why we have a number of tips we give producers during seeding and harvest."

Another factor could be fatigue, with farmers in the field working long hours without sleep. As a result, the worker may not be paying attention to his or her surroundings. To prevent contacting a power line stay aware of your surroundings, Attend SaskPower's Saftey campaign in April of every year, and people can contact SaskPower to get power lines buried to prevent an accident.

Since April of 2018, there have been 230 reports of farm machinery making contact with a power line or another form of electrical equipment.
