A special night for four Humboldt citizens Thursday night at the Humboldt and District Art Gallery.

The local chapter of Big Brothers Big Sisters held their second annual Celebration of Mentoring event.

During the mini-gala the crowd of about 50 people heard from a number of "littlles" and "bigs" and dignitaries all highlighting their experiences with the organization.

One of those was Brody Hinz, he was presented with the Youth of the Year. After almost a decade of being involved with BBBS, he says it's played a crucial role in his life.

"Yes, yeah, definitely," he said among the mingling after the program ended. "For me personally I was really shy when I was little and I wouldn't have been able to do this if it wasn't for Big Brothers Big Sisters."

Also taking home awards during the event was Kathy Seipp, she was recognized as Mentor of the Year, Megan Parker was honoured with the Volunteer of the Year and Carla Clement, the owner of Johnny's Bistro was presented with the Champion Award.

During the program the presenters and speakers touched on their personal experiences with the organization and mentoring in general including Humboldt's MLA, Donna Harpauer.

As we saw tonight, they can tell the story way better than us and the impact that mentoring has on their life," said Marketing and Recruitment Coordinator Stacey Poss. "I really like the message Donna sent, it's true we all have mentors in our lives whether it's to help us make a decision or guide us along the way."

If you have any thoughts on perhaps getting involved with BBBS, Hinz might be able to convince you.

"'Don't worry about what other people think, we're looking for mentors all the time for these kids. If people want to come be a mentor, go ahead. For me I would love to see more kids my age come and be a mentors to these little kids that need it."

Also during the event Deputy Mayor Linda Mattock proclaimed September as Big Brothers Big Sisters month in the City of Humboldt.
