As part of celebrating Big Brothers, Big Sisters month the Humboldt chapter held their awards gala at the Art Gallery Thursday night.

Justin Tarrant has been involved with BBBS since he was young in Moose Jaw, his dedication to the program landed him the Mentor of the Year honour.

The recognition was something that caught him off guard.

"I was totally shocked actually, I was completely humbled. I didn't think I deserve the award, I didn't feel like I was doing anything above and beyond. I was totally shocked, caught me out of left field."

He has been matched with a youngster who moved to Saskatoon shortly after they got together but he admits he couldn't stop being a role model to him.

"He's going through quite a bit at home right now and I decided that he needed a little more stability so for me to leave after eight months of being matched it just wouldn't fly with me so I am making that trek back and forth from Saskatoon just to make sure the match keeps going."

Carol Pratt was named Volunteer of the Year for her work with the Diva for a Day golf tournament. That's a co-fundraiser for the Humboldt and District Kinettes and BBBS.

"Stacey(Poss, BBBS Recruitment Coordinator) phoned me and said congratulations, we would like to give you the Volunteer of the Year award," Pratt said after the event.

"I said, me or the Kinettes? She said no, you! You've really helped out our organization with the Diva for a Day. I was like, wow, thank you! I was taken back, I was shocked."

Kenzie Mckeown was recognized with the Youth of the Year, PCS in Lanigan was given the Champions Award for their contribution to the Bowl for Kids' Sake fundraiser every February.

This is the third year BBBS has held the event. A special part of the agenda is hearing from the "littles" who speak prior to the recipients receiving their awards. It is eye opening experience to see how much a match can mean to their lives.

You can hear more from both Tarrant and Pratt below in their interviews with Bolt FM's Clark Stork.
