The Knights of Columbus along with Special Olympics Humboldt held a pancake breakfast at St Agustine Parish Hall on Sunday, February 24th.

The breakfast was a fundraiser to help support the Special Olympics teams travel costs throughout the year.

"It's for our Special Olympic athletes so we have the ability to travel and go different placed to compete with other teams from all over the province. We have athletes that need to travel, need to stay in hotels,  and also eat. So we use our donations towards that so our athletes can compete," said Shelley Finney with Special Olympics Humboldt.

Finney has coached with Special Olympics for 14 years and greatly appreciates the contribution and partnership with the Knights of Columbus.

"It is amazing. They have helped us out for roughly 10 years now. Last year we couldn't fit in a pancake breakfast and they still gave us a generous donation so we are very grateful for the Knights of Columbus.

The breakfast made for a great opportunity for the community to get together and spend time interacting with the athletes.

"Our athletes are so out there in the community and it's wonderful to see the inclusion that is happening. Our athletes are treated with respect and dignity and we need them to be a part of our community. It increases their self-esteem and pride and with the community inclusion it helps them all have a better opportunity at life."

When the athletes aren't interacting with the community, they are out proving that they compete with the best, and often, with high results.

"We were just recently at the Winter Games and our floor hockey team took gold for Saskatchewan, our bowlers took home silver. We also have an athlete who is representing us and representing Canada at Worlds in three weeks in Dubai. As an athlete, there are only six people chosen from Saskatchewan and our little Humboldt has Tia (Zimmerman) who is off to Worlds."
