The Bruno Axemen have long established themselves as the pinnacle for broomball in Saskatchewan.

That was once again apparent on Sunday afternoon, as the Axemen claimed another provincial championship, defeating Balgonie 2-1.

"This is our 17th consecutive final and I think out of those 17, we have won 12 now and 19 altogether," said Coach Ray Bender after the win.

"It just doesn't get old."

It was the second year in a row that the Axemen defeated Balgonie in the final, taking a 4-2 decision last year.

The Elgar Petersen Arena hosted games from Friday to Sunday, with 11 teams competing in the men's and women's tournaments.

Bender says the EPA played a perfect host.

"Good crowds all weekend and the arena here is ideal for broomball," he noted. "You have the high glass and it is nice and warm and you can block the shots. It's a lovely facility for broomball."

Trips across the country are familiar for the Axemen as well, and another provincial championship will see them off to compete for the Canadian crown.

"We will represent Saskatchewan next year at Portage la Prairie with Manitoba hosting nationals. In three weeks we are off to Quebec from last year's provincial championship."

The Axemen have won three national championships in their history, last winning in 2007 in Selkirk, Manitoba.
