With summer in full swing, people are being reminded to take care of their pets as the sun shines down on hot days.

Although taking your dog to enjoy the outdoors may seem like a good idea, Gary Overs notes that doing so could harm them.

"There's no sense in taking them for walks when it is 25 degrees outside. It is over 52 degrees on asphalt, which can burn their feet."

"If you could take the back of your hand and put it on the street and if you can't hold it there for longer than five seconds, then it is too hot for your dog's feet," he continued.

Allowing the dogs to take breaks from the sun in the shade or inside is also ideal.

If dogs are outside for longer periods of time, Overs recommends having a larger water supply handy, incase of emergency.

"You can have a little kiddie pool set up in shade and provide them with fresh water. Sometimes the dog can spill its dish without realizing the consequence of it and be in trouble."

He added that the best thing to do on really warm days may be to leave them at home.
