Over 22 thousand Canadians are currently suffering from leukemia.

One of those people is Brandon Bernauer of Humboldt. At eight years of age, Bernauer was diagnosed with the disease and managed to fight it off. 20 years later, it would return and for the past 2 years, Bernauer has been undergoing radiation therapy and chemotherapy.

Now Bernauer looks to fight off the disease with a successful stem cell transplant. To raise funds for the operation a supper took place on Saturday at the Humboldt Legion Hall. People could purchase supper, bid on silent auction items, and take part in a dance.

"We need to say thank you to everyone who donated silent auction items, they're coming in as people walk through the door and we've just been so lucky and it's been overwhelming," said Michelle Hauser, one of the organizers of the event.

The best chance of coming out of a successful stem cell transplant is if the donor is a sibling. As a result, Bernauer's sister, Brittany, has an eight out of eight stem cell match and is ready to donate.

So far around $10,000 has been raised for Bernauer's transplant. To donate, a pancake breakfast is being run at the St. Augustine Parish on March 31st. Also, people can make donations at the Conexus Credit Union in Humboldt.
