It was a busy weekend on the ice for Humboldt's hockey teams.

The Midget AA Broncos swept a pair of games, defeating the Saskatoon Steel 1-0 on Saturday, before edging Martensville 4-3 on Sunday.

In Saturday's contest, Kobe Kokoski scored the lone goal in the first period, as Dawson Cochrane kept things clean around his own goal, recording the shutout.

The Broncos hosted Martensville on Sunday, getting goals from four different players to win their second straight game.

Damon Vanderlinde opened the scoring for Humboldt in the first period. Carter Sawchuk made it 2-0 early in the middle frame, before Martensville deposited a pair of goals to tie the game.

The tie game wouldn't last long, as Evan Zentner buried a power play marker to give Humboldt a 3-2 lead. Daigon Elmy added to the lead with just under ten minutes to play, making it 4-2.

Martensville made it close late, scoring with 2:09 remaining, but that was all they could muster.

With five games left in the regular season, Humboldt sits third overall in the standings.


The Midget A Broncos concluded their regular season in the East Central league on Saturday.

Friday night, Humboldt visited Wynyard, where after a good start, they were on the losing side of a 6-2 score.

The game was tied 2-2 after 20 minutes before the Monarchs were able to pull away.

At home on Saturday, the Broncos ran a first period tie in their favour, defeating Davidson 8-3.

Tayden Wallin had a pair of goals, with Lorne Abrey, Chase Unger, Carson Horachek, Theo Flory and Cody Bergermann getting the other tallies.

The Broncos will finish in either fourth or fifth place and take on Watrous in the first round of playoffs.


The Bantam AA Broncos played their fourth and fifth straight home games at the Elgar Petersen Arena on Saturday and Sunday.

They welcomed the league-leading Saskatoon Maniacs on Saturday, falling 3-2 in a tightly contested game.

Kaden Kohle and Brett Fogg scored the goals for Humboldt, who gave up all three markers against while killing penalties.

On Sunday, the Regina Monarchs were at the Elgar Petersen Arena, but Humboldt was unable to generate more than one goal, as they fell 2-1.

Derek Tarnowski made 25 saves in goal for the Broncos. Michael Kunz scored the only goal for the home side.

The Broncos have four games remaining in the regular season, and currently sit 7th overall in the North Division standings of the Saskatchewan Bantam AA Hockey League.


The Peewee AA Broncos were in Regina for the annual Pats Peewee Classic.

Humboldt played its first game on Thursday, falling 7-3 to the Sherwood Park Steel Kings. They played two games on Friday to wrap up the round robin, tying the Regina Blues 2-2 in their first game.

The second game saw a strong effort from the Broncos, as they upset the Kelowna Jr. Rockets, who would go on to win the tournament.

With a 1-1-1 record, Humboldt was placed into the 'C' draw, where they edged the Regina Mustangs 4-3 in the quarter-finals.

The tournament would end for Humboldt in the 'C' semi, losing 4-2 to the Yorkton Terriers.

With five games left in the regular season, the Broncos resume their Centre Four Hockey League schedule on Saturday against Prince Albert. They are 5th overall in the standings.


On the hardwood, it was a strong weekend for a shorthanded HCI Mohawks Senior Boys basketball team.

The Mohawks travelled to North Battleford to play in a tournament hosted by John Paul II Collegiate.

In their first game of the tournament, Humboldt knocked off the Junior Varsity team 68-50. 

That set them up for a semi-final game against the Meath Park Mustangs. A back and forth first half saw the game tied 27-27.

In the third quarter, the Mohawks were able to pull ahead, outscoring Meath Park 16-12 to take a 43-39 edge to the final ten minutes.

It was in the fourth quarter that Humboldt found full stride, pulling away with a 25-8 run to take a 68-47 win.

In the final, Humboldt met the host JPII for a classic championship game.

HCI lead by six points at the half, with the Crusaders closing the gap throughout the second half.

After the Crusaders turned the ball over, the Mohawks had a last second chance to win the game in regulation, but the buzzer beater attempt rimmed out, sending the game to overtime.

In the three minute extra session, the Crusaders were able to eek out the win, 75-73.

With multiple players injured, and only eight players in total, Mohawks Coach Ron Roach was pleased with his team's effort throughout the weekend.

"They gave us everything this weekend, and with a short line-up, we needed guys to step up, and we were pleased to see that they responded for a strong finish."
