Palpable excitement filled the halls and the gym at Humboldt Collegiate Institute Saturday.

"We haven't lost a set and we're really excited for the gold medal match", says Coach David Millette, minutes before the gold-medal final game during the 4A Boys Volleyball tournament held at HCI Friday and Saturday.

The many months of hard work and community support culminated in a gold medal win for the Mohawks, after taking on the team from La Loche Saturday evening.

The boys have shown consistent dedication to the volleyball team this year, through early morning practices, after-school practices, and meetings, Millette says.

He says the boys' commitment to the team is evident in their successful results this season.

Millette says he and the team have been having a great weekend at this year's 4A Boys Volleyball Provincial tournament, and it was an honour for HCI to host the volleyball finals this year.

"We couldn't be here without the dedication we've had all season"

The 4A Boys Volleyball Team is comprised of varying ages, with a high number of senior students. Millette attributes the team's success this year to the fact that a lot of graduating students have brought an element of maturity to the rest of the group.

"These (grade) 12's are a big reason why we're experiencing success. They've elevated some of some of our younger players.

The whole team has worked well together and encouraged each other throughout the season.

"Whether it be our starting six or the people we switch in or the people on the bench, we have a great amount of depth. That's what we pride ourselves in."

The support from the community has also played an important role this season. Millette thanks the local businesses, parents, and teachers for their on-going dedication to the senior boys' volleyball team.

"We owe our extreme gratitude for all the effort they've put forward."

Coach Millette wishes nothing but the best for his grade 12 boys who will be finishing their high school athletic careers at the end of this school year.

"I'm sure they'll have great futures. They've learned a lot and I continue to learn from them."
