From never having much interest in golf to a trip to Texas, Tayden Wallin's career in the sport has come a long way in a short amount of time.

"I never really liked golf until it was the summer of Grade 8 or Grade 9," he explained. "I went out golfing with my dad a couple times and realized I was kind of good at it, so I went in some tournaments and had some success and from there it just took off."

'Kind of good at it', indeed.

It didn't take the Grade 12 student at HCI long to find his way in the high school scene, winning a district championship in Grade 9. He went on to place in the Top 20 at provincials that year, and continued an uphill climb to the top.

Wallin broke through in 2015, winning the provincial championship, and fell just shy of repeating that title in a rain-soaked atmosphere this year.

He won the district title in the Horizon Central Athletic Association each year, while also being a star name on the Golf Saskatchewan Junior Order of Merit Tour.

Less than five years after he took up the game in a serious way, Wallin landed interest from many NCAA schools.

"It started back in January with a lot of coaches e-mailing me and going on the phone with them and seeing what the programs are like," he said of the recruiting process. "All throughout the summer they have been watching me and in the past couple of weeks I narrowed my decision down."

"I made my final decision to go to Midwestern State after me and my mom went down there and checked the whole place out and really liked it."

The campus of Midwestern State is located in Wichita Falls, Texas, which, with the size of the city and school, he felt it was an ideal fit.

"It is about two hours northwest of Dallas. It is a city of about 110,000 people," noted Wallin. "Not a huge campus, but it is a good size where you're not too overwhelmed or anything."

Midwestern State competes in Division II in the NCAA, and while there aren't any well-known golfers as alumni, Dr. Phil McGraw is among the marquee names to come from the school.

Wallin added that while there is plenty of excitement, he knows that there will be an adjustment period along the way.

"I don't think it will sink in until I get there and I am on my own. Right now, I am really excited for it but I am sure I will get nervous more when the time comes."

In heading to compete in the NCAA, Wallin joins a list of HCI alumni that in recent years includes Utah basketball player Paige Crozon and volleyball player at UTEP, Lindsey Larson - both of which are in their final seasons.
