Following back-to-back silver medals, the Wakaw Warriors Senior Girls Volleyball team returned to the top of the mountain Saturday night, claiming 3A gold over the Wynyard Bears.

It was the first of two meetings on the day between the Horizon School Division opponents.

Earlier, Wynyard downed Wakaw in three sets to secure first place in the pool.

Redemption was on the minds of the Warriors, as they took the first set of the final 25-21. Wynyard powered back, forcing a third and deciding set with a 25-17 win in the middle session.

An intense battle saw the two sides locked at 13 midway through the finale before Wakaw took control, claiming a 25-17 win for the three set victory.

The win gives the Warriors an unprecedented seventh provincial title in nine years, highlighted by six straight championships from 2007-2012.

For Wynyard, they overcame quarter-final exits the past two seasons to reach the championship game.

In the 4A bracket, the Watrous Winston Wildcats hit the bounce back tour on their way to the final.

After beginning the round robin with a pair of wins, they had their first setback against Notre Dame, dropping a three set decision before also falling to Clavet.

That gave them a third place standing, and a meeting against the Lumsden Devils. After quickly disposing of the Devils in two sets, they walked into a rematch with Notre Dame in the semi-final.

The Wildcats ensured a better fate than their 2014 bronze with a two set sweep, setting them up with another familiar opponent in the championship game.

Last year, Watrous fell in three sets to Caronport in the semi-finals before settling for a third place finish, and an opportunity to avenge that loss was before them in the 4A title game.

A back and forth first set saw the Wildcats lead by as much as four points before Caronport battled back, ultimately taking a 25-23 decision.

The hard fought effort appeared to take the sail out of Watrous, as they fell 25-9 in the second set, claiming the silver medal.

Watrous upgraded from bronze in 2014 to silver in 2015.

In the opening game of 1A play, Rose Valley fell in three sets to Saskatoon Legacy Christian.

From there, the Roadrunners won three straight games to put them into a good spot heading in to the playoff round.

In the quarter-finals they downed Rouleau in two sets before taking care of Englefeld in straight sets as well.

That set them up for a rematch against Legacy Christian, and another three set battle.

In what was the closest of all the finals, Saskatoon led by as much as six with Rose Valley continuously keeping themselves in the game, but were unable to close the gap past three points, falling 25-22.

Despite coming up short, it was a much improved season for the Roadrunners, who were stunned in regionals last year, falling in the semi-finals to Hepburn after entering the tournament unbeaten.

On the 2A side, the Foam Lake Panthers lost just one set in the round robin, as they finished with a perfect 4-0 record heading into the playoffs.

In the quarter-finals they continued their dominance, sweeping St. Walburg in two sets.

That moved them into a rematch with Davidson, who knocked the Panthers out in the 2014 quarter-finals on their way to a bronze medal.

A similar fate for Foam Lake saw Davidson take a two set sweep, dropping the Panthers to the bronze medal game, where they claimed a third place standing with a two set win over Kahkewistahaw.

Davidson went on to win the gold with a three set win over Invermay that was highlighted by a 30-28 middle session.

The Englefeld Eagles claimed their second straight bronze medal in the 1A category, after they defeated the hosts from Medstead in two straight sets.

Last year, the Eagles entered provincials as the top seed before falling in the semi-finals to the eventual champions from Colonsay.
