The Wadena Composite School girls curling team makes sure to keep the fun in the sport, principal Darin Faubert says.

He believes that’s why they won the 2018 SHSAA Sportsmanship Award.

The girls were regional champions and finished just out of the playoffs at the provincial championship. At that level it’s easy to lose focus on the idea that players need to have fun and enjoy what they’re doing - but this team didn't, he said.

“And I think this team exemplified that more than anybody I’ve seen in years. They have a lot of fun curling, they have a lot of fun in the idea of communicating with opposing teams and visiting with opposing teams, and they keep the game fun.

“And because of that, I think it’s going to become a lifelong venture for them.”

The team consists of Julia Pomedli, Kea Narfason, Brittany Andreas and Cierra Andreas, with coaches Dwight Pomedli and Rebecca Athmer.

The sportsmanship award is sponsored by Sask Milk.
