To get something of value you usually have to give up something of considerable worth.

Jarrett Fontaine was a valuable commodity the Weyburn Red Wings sought to hopefully push them to a Canalta Cup, the Humboldt Broncos have seen a glimpse of the possible payoff for their hometown favourite.

Chris Van Os-Shaw, two years younger than his trade partner has compiled five goals and three assists in just a trio of games with the green and gold. Tuesday night at the Elgar Petersen Arena Van Os-Shaw scored twice in the second period and added an empty netter in the third to complete a hat trick in a 6-3 win over the Melfort Mustangs.

The win snapped a three game losing streak including two lopsided losses on the weekend in Weyburn and Estevan.

"It's great, the boys are fired up," the 18 year-old Van Os-Shaw said after his first carer junior hat trick. " A couple bad losses on the road this weekend so it's good to get a win at home here."

Humboldt opened the scoring, during a delayed penalty call early in the first Logan Boulet raced towards a loose puck in front of Evan Plotnik giving Humboldt a 1-0 lead. Logan Schatz and Van Os-Shaw were credited with the helpers on Boulet's first career Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League goal.

Despite Melfort controlling most of the play in the first the Broncos generated another power-play but while that was underway Trevor Posch was called for a check to the head of Ashton Clark who was injured on the play. During the four-on-four play, the Mustangs thrived, Rylan Freed and Wyatt Hinson both scored giving the Mustangs a 2-1 lead after the first period.

Melfort would make it 3-1 at 12:17 of the second when Sam Houston scored on a seeing eye wrist shot.

The Mustangs quickly went back on the power-play themselves with a chance to likely put the Broncos down and out for good but cue Van Os-Shaw.

He picked a Stangs' defender at the blueline breaking in all alone and making a great move on Plotnik to get Humboldt within a goal.  During a Humboldt man advantage just two and a half minutes later, Van Os-Shaw converted a Logan Schatz pass tying it 3-3.

In the third the home side kept pouring  it on, Michael Korol snapped a shot past Plotnik off the post and in to make it 4-3 just 1:10 into the third. Korol's sixth would go down as the game winner which was unassisted.

Laramie Kostelansky would add another for the insurance before Van Os-Shaw iced it when Richard Palmer, who came on in relief after Kostelansky's seventh of his rookie season was on the bench for an extra attacker.

"It feels really good," Van Os-Shaw added. "I can tell there's a rival here in Humboldt and getting a hat trick in your debut is pretty awesome, it's special."

Carter Seminuk picked up the win in goal for the Broncos, the first for the 18 year-old in the SJHL since coming over from the Drayton Valley Thunder. He made 24 saves, Plotnik was yanked after giving up the five goals on just 13 shots. Palmer was perfect on nine.

This is the second straight time Humboldt has beaten Melfort at home, they are now 6-1-1 in their last eight at the EPA, Tuesday's win fittingly enough on Petersen's 80th birthday.

Humboldt will now rest and build off the win and prepare for their most critical game of the season in Yorkton Saturday night. The Broncos jumped back over Melville for 11th place in the standings with the victory and one back of the Terriers however both have games in hand making the head to head match-ups crucial. Pregame show of KMK Sales Broncos' hockey is at 7:15, face-off 15 minutes later.

You can hear more from Van Os-Shaw below in his interview with Bolt FM's Clark Stork.

Also Tuesday, Nipawin edged Weyburn 3-2 in the only other game.
