Humboldt's Brianne Theisen-Eaton has once again been named Sask Sport's Female Athlete of the Year.

Theisen-Eaton won a bronze medal in heptathlon at the 2016 Rio Olympics, becoming the first Canadian Olympian to medal in the event.

The 28-year-old graduate of Humboldt Collegiate Institute also won gold at the Hypo-Meeting in Austria, as well as the IAAF Indoor Championships.

It is the fourth straight year that Theisen-Eaton has won the award. It will also be her last, after retiring from athletics in January.

St. Brieux's Jillian Gallays was a finalist for the award. She also competed at the Rio Olympics, taking part in wrestling.

Gallays won gold at the Pan-Am Olympic Qualifier in Texas to qualify for the games.

After a strong return to the oval ice, Humboldt's William Dutton was a finalist for Male Athlete of the Year.

Dutton earned silver in the 500m skate at the ISU World Cup in Calgary, breaking the Saskatchewan record for time at just over 34 seconds.

He also picked up gold at a similar event in Salt Lake City, and competed in Russia and the Netherlands.

Gavin Schmitt of Saskatoon won the award as Captain of Canada's Men's Volleyball team in Rio.

Four Muenster Red Sox, who helped Saskatchewan win the Baseball Canada Cup for just the second time ever, were finalists in the Team of the Year category.

Logan Hofmann, Brody Frerichs, Parker McRae, Tyler McWillie and Saskatchewan defeated BC 6-1 in the Gold Medal game in Fort McMurray.

They were runner-ups to the University of Saskatchewan Huskies Women's Basketball team, which won the national championship.
