Team Canada’s final game at the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship was a tough one.

They had just lost to the eventual gold winner, Switzerland, in a heartbreaking semifinal a few hours before. Now, they were playing Korea for a bronze medal.

“But when you’re playing for Team Canada and you’ve got the maple leaf on your back, you're going to leave it all out on the table,” Kirk Muyres told Bolt FM.

“So we went out there, we played as hard as we could and luckily enough we played really well. We put some rocks in good positions and were able to get the bronze medal. So it’s exciting to come home with a medal for Canada.”

Muyres and teammate Laura Crocker defeated Korea by a score of 8-3.

Crocker is a true champion who will make a big shot when the chips are down, Muyres said.

“We haven’t been together long but we played a really good tournament. We put rocks in good spots, we had good communication.

“Obviously you want to win the gold but sometimes that’s just not in the cards, but I just love the way we battled and were able to win that bronze medal game.”

Now that he's had a taste of mixed doubles, he might just like it better than the four-person game.

"I don't know which one's better, but this last run we had in the mixed doubles sure was fun. It's exciting to play. If I had to pick one, I'd probably pick mixed doubles right now but that's just because I'm riding the wave."

Forty teams competed in the championship, far more than the 10 or 11 seen at a typical event, Muyres said.

That meant Team Canada played nontraditional curling teams like Brazil and Guyana before running into more familiar powerhouses in the playoffs.

“I think the Olympics has had a major influence on the game over the last 8 to 12 years and it’s getting more and more exposure all over the world. When you get countries like that that are interested in the game, excited about the game, it’s really good.”

Muyers spoke to Bolt FM on Tuesday, his last day taking in the sights of host city Stockholm with his girlfriend.

“It's gorgeous. It’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve seen. It’s kind of among a lot of lakes and islands and it’s just beautiful.”
