Led by brothers Brayden and Adam Mytopher, the William Derby Vikings from Strasbourg are the new provincial champions for 1A schools in cross country running.

The Vikings claimed the title on Saturday in Turtleford as provincials were held.

Both Mytopher boys won their individual races, with Brayden winning the senior boys run by just one second, while Adam claimed the midget boys crown by a whopping 26 seconds.

Four other runners helped make up the representation in Turtleford for the Vikings.

Alyson Edwards finished 15th in the senior girls run. Parker Davey and Caleb Smith finished 31st and 37th in junior boys, while Whitney Flavel was 16th in junior girls.

Strasbourg edged out Lake Lenore for the 1A team title. The Lancers had won the past three provincial titles for 1A schools.

Jade Smith of Lake Lenore picked up an individual medal, taking silver in the junior girls race.

The top five for 1A was an all Horizon Central finish, with Muenster claiming third, Middle Lake finishing in fourth, and Annaheim placing fifth.

Wynyard (8th) and St. Brieux (13th) were also in the 1A classification.

Improving on their mark from last year, the HCI Mohawks finished fourth among 3A schools, narrowly beaten out by Sheldon Williams of Regina for third.

The top finisher for the Mohawks was Teijon Abel-Douglas, who claimed the bronze medal in the midget boys run, missing out on second place by two seconds.

Other runners for HCI included:

  • Rylan Marianchuk (30th) and Seth Schuler (37th) in senior boys
  • Makenna Gerwing (37th) and Jenna Giddings (47th) in senior girls
  • Garrett Brown (51st) in junior boys
  • Jay Eichorst (75th) in midget boys
  • Julianna Engele-Lueke (13th), Emma Abrey (30th), Lauren Hinz (38th), Sydney Hilbert (63rd) and Kiana Leicht (64th) in junior girls.
