The Broncos struggles with the Battlefords Stars continued Saturday night as they fell 3-1 on the road.

Matthieu Gomercic scored his first career goal for Humboldt and gave themselves a 1-0 lead in the first but the Stars scored three unanswered en route to their ninth straight victory over the green and gold dating back to the 2014-15 season.

Assistant Coach Brayden Klimosko pointed to a pair of defensive break downs for the loss.

"We had a very good first period, we played really well, probably our best period of the year. We really make two mistakes and they score two goals. They're are big mistakes, they really are."

The first came during a Broncos' power-play midway through the second frame, a turnover behind their net led to Troy Gerein rifling the tying marker past Garret Mason after he hit the post on his first blast from the slot.

That was the fifth short-handed goal allowed by the Broncos already this season. That's the most in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.

"We've got to shore that up, we really have to, it's not good right now and it probably costs us the game at the end of the day," Klimosko stated.

"We're up 1-0 at the time and doing a good job at a lot of things."

The second was a lost puck battle in the corner and Ben Allen being wide open in front of Mason for the game winner in the third.

Cody Downs hit an empty net in the final minute to cap the scoring.

Mason was sensational stopping 43/45 in the loss, his fourth of the campaign. Joel Gryzbowski stopped 29/30 for the Stars who haven't lost to Humboldt since January 28/2015.

Each team was goalless on their power-plays, Humboldt had six tries, the Stars generated on more.

"There was a lot of good efforts tonight but it wasn't quite there," Klimosko praised. "We just need a couple more chances generated to beat a team like the Battlefords."

The visitors also played the second half without 20 year-old forward and second leading scorer Trevor Posch who fell awkwardly into the boards and didn't finish the night. They are still without captain Logan Schatz and rookie play maker Brayden Camrud.

They will look to rebound at home on Tuesday versus the Notre Dame Hounds who haven't seen the Elgar Petersen Arena since opening weekend. Face-off is 7:30. The Broncos are 3-0 against the Hounds this year.

Elsewhere Saturday night in the SJHL, Kindersley shut-out Estevan 6-0, the Nipawin Hawks blanked LaRonge 3-0 and the Weyburn Red Wings doubled Yorkton 6-3.

You can hear more form Klimosko below as well as Gomercic, he was the first intermission guest on the broadcast.
