Some say defense wins championships. But combine it with an offensive punch that we saw today for the Humboldt Broncos and you'll find yourself in the win column regularly.

After winning two in a row, the Broncos came into Warman for the 2018 SJHL Showcase with one of their toughest tests of the young season in front of them. The Estevan Briuns have had no problem scoring goals this season with 23 over the first 4 games. The broncos who routinely play with a ton of speed had to make sure they used the speed correctly to avoid getting caught in a track meet with the Bruins.

The first period was all Humboldt as they jumped out to an early lead for the third game in a row.  This time on the powerplay courtesy of Josh Patrician and his first of the season. That would end up opening the floodgates. The Broncos with their foots firmly on the gas pedal would score three more times in the opening frame. Michael Clarke would get his second of the year, along with Jackson Kobelka and Zach McIntyre's first.

Although the offense was clicking in a four goal first period outburst, it was the defence play by all skaters that was the engine of the Broncos success. Time after time the Bruins attempted to enter the zone and every time they were flustered by the Broncos system. When shots did come, they were from awful angles that wouldn't scare any goaltender, let alone the current SJHL goalie of the week in Dane Dow.

Second period and more of the same. Defensive play that oozed success upwards through the lineup and into the attack leading to two more Broncos' goals scored by Daunte Fortner and McIntyre for his second of the game.

Estevan would find their game halfway through the second and start to even up the offensive zone time with the Broncos, in turn scoring two of their own goals.

However, with a 4 goal cushion still intact the Broncos would once again cruise through the third and shutdown any late attack brought to them by the Estevan Bruins.

Offense is necessary, defense is needed. Put them together like the game today and it's going to be tough even trending water against this Humboldt Broncos team.
