The second half of the Saskatchewan Winter Games began on Thursday in North Battleford.

Prairie Central continued off their first half momentum in hockey, with the girls team earning wins of 13-4 and 5-0.

The two wins ensure they will play for a medal on Saturday. They take on Regina in their final round robin game on Friday and will play for gold with a win, or bronze with a loss.

The team has seven Humboldt area players competing, including Nicole Girolami, Lauren Hinz, Drew Vipond and Kiana Leicht, as well as Lanigan's Cassadi Klapak, Watson's Sydney Martin and Bridgette Vedress of St. Brieux.

In curling, Becca Fitzsimmons and Marlyse Steckler of Colonsay and their team split the day, going 1-1. They will be looking for a win on Friday to have a chance for the medals.

The first day of badminton saw two tight matches for Prairie Central, with one win and one loss. The combined team format sees two head-to-head matches for boys and girls singles, boys and girls doubles, and one match of mixed doubles.

Humboldt's Rylan Marianchuk and Seth Schuler won both of their matches. Taevan Athmer and Kara Miskolczi of Englefeld, and Landon Linnen from Raymore are also representing Prairie Central, who take on Saskatoon on Friday.

In cross country skiing, Englefeld's Claire Gullacher had a good showing in the 5km ski, placing fifth overall. In the boys event, Lanigan's Brayden Nivon finished sixth, while Ethan Fleischhacker of Humboldt came in 13th place.

Team bowling saw Humboldt's Ben Weninger and Prairie Central go 1-2 in their matches on Thursday, while in Special Olympics bowling, the team went 2 and 3.

The Special Olympics group is made up of Jessica and Jocelyn Ehr, Sam Fisher and Ryan Michel.
