The Marysburg Royals will once again take the field this season in the Saskatoon Senior Men's Baseball League.

This will be the 98th consecutive year the tiny farming village has fielded a squad, a remarkable accomplishment in it's own right. Even more impressive is they win and they win a lot.

The Royals are the five time defending regular season pennant winners.

However, much of their success is credited to the corporations and members of the public who are key contributors to the team.

To start, they are having a steak night in Marysburg on Saturday, April 23rd. Tickets are $20 and available by calling Curtis Strueby at 231-6392, Paul Strueby at 231-4256 or Brent Puetz at 231-8204. The funds raised are going to help with field renovations including a new fence and backstop.

Curtis says their fundraising is real important.

"We don't have clubs in our community that help pay for this so all the funding for maintenance on the diamonds and these renovations we do comes right out of the players pockets. This is a big one so we're trying to do some fundraisers here and there and hopefully have a back stop up in the next little while."

Only 100 steak night tickets will be sold.

Another event that they will be hosting is their annual baseball camp for local youngsters which has become a popular attraction for area ball players.

"I'm not going to lie, it's a huge fundraiser for us" Strueby continued. "Like we decided to do seven years ago or so, how can we do a fundraiser and give back at the same time? Like you said, it's been a big success. I was just actually updating our registration list, we're up over 60 kids already."

You can call any of the three listed members to register, the camp is open to kids from rally cap to bantam. That will happen May 7th and 8th at Marysburg.

The schedule for the season is being finalized, the Royals will get their usual four or five Sunday double headers with all the other games played under the lights in the Bridge City.

If you are looking for a great way to spend a sunny Sunday, the jewel of a park is located just 10 minutes north of Humboldt. There is a concession with grilled food, ice cream and drinks plus a small playground for young ones to keep busy.

"Yeah, it's a nice setting," Strueby beamed. "It's relaxing, it is a nice way to go out and hang out, there is a lot of things for people to do out there, it's good."

Strueby wanted to give special thanks to PotashCorp for helping them buy new uniforms this year, Affinity Credit Union has provided some sponsorship as well for the camp next month.

The Royals also have a website with more information.
