The season opening contests for both the Marysburg Royals senior baseball team and the Bruno Merchants fastball team were among the highlights of local sports on Wednesday night.

The Royals dropped the opener of their 98th season 10-3 to the Saskatoon Smokin' Guns.

Longtime Royal Curtis Strueby says they managed to get some young players in the game as all 18 players got onto the field. Their next game is June 1st against the Saskatoon Dodgers.

The Merchants faced two different teams in the Bridge City in an opening night double header in the Saskatoon Amateur Softball Association.

Justin Dauvin pitched a three hit gem in a 5-1 win over the Delisle Diamond Dogs. Matt Hillier hit a solo homerun. In their second game they weren't so fortunate, the Saskatoon Sharks blanked them 10-0. Keannen Tarnowski suffered the loss. The Merchants meet the Saskatoon Angels next Wednesday(May 25th).

The AA Bantam Muenster Red Sox breezed by the Saskatoon braves 9-2 in Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League play.

On the ice at the RBC Cup in Lloydminster Alberta, the West Kelowna Warriors moved to 2-1-1 with a 4-1 win over the Carlton Place Canadians who drop to 0-2-0-1.

Thursday at the national junior "A" championship the Brooks Bandits(2-1) take on Carlton place at 3:30. At 7:30, the Trenton Golden Hawks(2-0-0-1) meet former Humboldt Bronco Greg Moro and the host Bobcats who are 0-2-1 in the event.

On Thursday's schedule elsewhere, just one game and that's in the Richardson Pioneer Men's Fastball League. The Foam Lake Merchants host the Wadena Wildcats.
