After ending the reign of the defending champion Rosthern Longhorns, the Wynyard Bears look to complete a golden season.

The Bears will host the Hanley Sabers on Saturday afternoon at George Lamb Field in the 2A 6-man High School Football Provincial Championship.

"It's an absolute dream come true," expressed Head Coach Morris Sokul, who has been coaching for 25 years and has never had the chance to host the final.

The last time Wynyard played host to a provincial final was in 1977 as a 9-man team, when they defeated Humboldt 55-22.

Sokul told history of a time before that, where a Canadian Football Hall of Famer participated in the game.

"Back when Roger Aldag made an appearance for the Gull Lake Lions and Wynyard won in 1969 in that game."

The tradition of football in Wynyard goes back over 60 years when the George Lamb led team won four straight 6-man provincial titles from 1953 to 1956.

Lamb would help guide the team to an additional six championships over the course of time, winning once more in 6-man in 1959 before taking five titles in 9-man in 1967, 1969, 1970, 1977 and 1978.

Sokul was part of the last championship in 2001, when the Bears defeated Lumsden 21-10.

The last appearance in the final for Wynyard was in 2012, when they visited Watrous, falling 52-44.

Back in the championship game, Sokul says it would be a perfect way to end a bounce back season.

"It would be the cap off of a dream season. A perfect 10-0 season. We are happy to be in this game and our program is very satisfied with the performance, but what a way it would be to cap it off."

Last year, the Bears lost to Birch Hills, ending their playoff run earlier than intended. That is something Sokul believes has fueled his team in 2016.

"The leadership this year, we felt we underachieved a little bit last year and our goal this year was to achieve," he said. "I think the experience from last year's disappointing loss, they came in focused and they are excelling."

In preparing for Hanley, who defeated Watrous 60-20 in the semi-finals, Sokul says that being at home will be big for them.

"We know that they are a potent run and pass offence. I think it is going to be a barn burner and we are trying to find a way to prepare our defence to make some key stops," he explained. "Hopefully our offence matches theirs, and with the homefield crowd at our backs, we hope to come out on top."

The Sabers last provincial championship came in 2009, when they defeated Kelliher 30-28.

Kickoff at George Lamb Field will be 1:00pm. Admission prices, as set by the SHSAA are $7 for adults, $5 for students in Grades 7-12, and free for those in Grade 6 and under.
