The Midget AAA Muenster Red Sox have completed the first step in their quest to win a second straight provincial championship.

The Red Sox earned a pair of wins on Saturday to clinch a spot in Sunday's semi-finals, defeating the Regina Athletics 13-2 and the Saskatoon Cubs 13-6.

Heading into the nightcap against the Cubs, both teams had already secured a spot in the semis.

Red Sox Coach Chad Hofmann noted that it was still important for his team to keep having good at-bats.

"You don't want to get any bad habits. We wanted to focus on taking good swings, because (Sunday) we will need to continue that, and we did tonight, so that was good to see."

With the essential mean nothing game, Hofmann went with first year Midget Matt McGrath on the mound.

McGrath put in five innings of work, striking out five batters along the way.

"He's a guy who will eat up innings when we need him too. He's come a long way for being a first year guy, and he is going to be a great pitcher in this league," said Hofmann, about McGrath. "He did a really good job tonight, helping us out."

The Red Sox will now meet the second seed from Pool A, which happens to be the Saskatoon Diamondbacks, who finished first in the regular season.

The two teams are quite familiar against each other, having played several times during the season, and also going back to last year's provincial final.

"It's going to be a good game like it is every time we play them. It's kind of like a rivalry in our league. We've played some good games against them," said Hofmann.

He added that if they can shake some defensive breakdowns and keep hitting the ball, they will be looking pretty good on Sunday.

"I think if we get rid of the one bad inning we have had each game, we should be okay. Our bats look really good right now and hopefully that continues (Sunday)."

The Red Sox have been able to generate 33 runs over three games thus far.

First pitch in the semi-finals is scheduled for 10:00am. If the Red Sox advance to the provincial final, it is scheduled for 1:00pm. That game would also be broadcast live on 107.5 Bolt FM.

A third place game will also take place at 1:00, with the winner joining the provincial runner-up as Saskatchewan representatives at the Western Canadian Championships.
