Jaxon Joseph broke a 5-5 tie with 8:04 to play, as the Melfort Mustangs edged the Humboldt Broncos 6-5 in preseason action Friday night.

A wild back-and-forth contest saw five goals scored in the first period.

Logan Schatz opened the scoring for the Broncos at 4:01. Melfort would reply just 52 seconds later when Justin Ball deposited his first of two goals on the night.

The Broncos went up 3-1 in a span of 90 seconds after Cole Young scored his fourth goal of the preseason. Stephen Wack buried a shot behind a screened goaltender to put Humboldt up two goals.

Melfort would answer back in quick fashion once again, cutting the lead in half 40 seconds later on a goal from Tanner Zentner.

Reed Gunville tied the game late in the opening 20 minutes for the Mustangs.

The second period saw the offence slow down, with only one goal on the scoresheet, as Ball gave the visitors a 4-3 lead at the 11:35 mark of the period.

Isaac Labelle relieved starter Sam-Jaxon Visscher midway through the second period, as the Broncos continue to look for their top two options in net.

Visscher stopped 15 of 18 shots faced in the loss, while Labelle went 14-for-17 in relief.

In the final frame, the Broncos struck in the first five minutes again, as Teddy Prior evened the game.

Melfort - again - replied quickly, with Carson Albrecht burying his own rebound past Labelle just 37 seconds later.

Schatz would score his second goal of the game 65 seconds later before Joseph put the Mustangs back up for good.
