The Muenster Cougars boys curling team is one step closer to making it back to provincials.

Muenster took the long route to win the Horizon Central district championship on Saturday in Wadena.

The Cougars picked up silver at last year's provincials, losing to Saskatoon in the final.

After dropping the tournament opener to Humboldt, Muenster had to win five straight games, including three over the two teams representing Humboldt, to claim the title.

The 'B' winner has to beat the 'A' winner two times in order to win districts, and the Cougars did just that.

Second place teams also advance to regionals, which Humboldt ensured, defeating Foam Lake on Friday afternoon.

In the girls draw, Ituna defeated Wakaw in the final, while the mixed bracket saw Strasbourg earn the district championship over Ituna.

Prince Albert will host boys and girls regionals, while the mixed teams will play in Candle Lake.

Regionals take place March 3 and 4, with provincials occurring the following weekend in Assiniboia and Moose Jaw.
