A pair of local legends will be honoured Friday night, as the HCI Mohawks Senior Girls basketball team holds the first Kevin J. Grieman Memorial Tournament.

Grieman and Wade Weseen will take the spotlight prior to a game between Humboldt and Lake Lenore - the two teams who were impacted by years of mentoring and coaching by the duo.

"On Friday night at 7:00, there is going to be a pink game against Lake Lenore, where we have purchased pink uniforms to pass on this pay it forward cancer fundraiser movement that we are part of," explained Mohawks Coach Kerri Archibald. "Prior to that game, we are going to be honouring Kevin Grieman and Wade Weseen - both coaches who we lost this past year."

Archibald, who is off from coaching this year after having a baby, was among those grateful for Grieman and Weseen's presence on the court.

Grieman served as her co-coach with the Mohawks, while Weseen was her uncle.

She said that it only made sense to honour their continued legacy that was left behind.

"Kevin and Wade both coached basketball in Humboldt and Lake Lenore respectively for over 35 years. The time and dedication it takes to build programs and coaching careers isn't a small feat, so we think the lasting legacy they have and the memories from hundreds and hundreds of students they have coached needs to be honoured."

The tournament will also serve as a fundraiser for cancer, with several avenues opened up to collect funds.

"We have a Mohawks give back raffle. All of our former athletes who have gone on to play at the college level have donated some gear for us to raffle off at the tournament," said Archibald. "The big thing we are going to be doing is the silent auction, which is going to be taking place in the HCI Commons area. You can also bid online through the Facebook event page."

She added that there has been an outpouring of support for the tournament, with 70 auction packages created from donations.

"I really appreciate everyone - we have had people from Naicam, Lanigan, Watrous and Saskatoon donate as well as many from Humboldt."

The team is also selling pink ribbons for two dollars, where you can dedicate the ribbon to someone who has been affected by cancer.

Archibald noted that money from the fundraisers will stay local to help those dealing with cancer.

"All of the money we make at this year's pink tournament will go to a new family or families who are currently battling cancer in our region."

Games begin at 2:30pm on Friday and continue all day Saturday.
