Last season, the Humboldt Collegiate Mohawks were a pair of missed opportunities away from a potential provincial high school 9-man football championship.

The Mohawks lost that title game in Clavet but on the eve of this season's post season they have taken another leap putting together a perfect 6-0 regular season record ensuring home field advantage at least until November 14th's championship.

They of course have to get there, but if you ask their Head Coach Cory Popoff, he believes they are ready to climb the mountain.

"Our kids right from the beginning of the season and going back to the last provincial championship we lost, they didn't want to do that again. They certainly got into the gym and worked hard on the field, I tell you I haven't seen a team in a long time that wanted to win so badly."

Perhaps the most important portion of the season came just a week ago when after three years of being burned, the Mohawks finally toppled the Melfort Comets 45-12 on the road.

With the confidence of that win the Mohawks appear ready for the grind which needs to include three wins if they want to win their first provincial title since 2010.

Popoff says the coaches will do what they need to prepare for Martensville who they host Saturday.

"That's when the film becomes really important," Popoff said when asked about facing teams they haven't seen. "We're pretty good at sharing with opposing teams. We spent just an inordinate amount of time taking a look at film, accessing strengths and areas where we can find success within opposing teams offensive and defensive structures."

That being said, Popoff and his staff can only prepare their team, the rest is up to them.

"We do keep our high expectations for the kids but you know what, at the end of the day our players are on the field. They have to read and react, they have to play the game to win. I always say the best we can do is prepare you for this, tell you what their tendencies are and the players have to play the game."

They will do just that beginning at 1pm at Glenn Hall park.

Elsewhere, Saturday in high school football, Clavet travels to Lumsden, Foam Lake is playing host to Delisle. In six man play, Watrous is home to Rosetown and Wynyard ventures to Birch Hills.
