The Saskatchewan Premier AAA Midget Baseball League provincial championships are set to get underway in Saskatoon Thursday afternoon.

The Muenster Red Sox will be the top seed in pool "A" heading into the four day event.

They earned that position following a remarkable regular season in which they posted a record of 27-3.

"Yeah obviously it's hard not to be happy with their performance," coach Chad Hofmann stated Thursday. Although he admits it's a new start this weekend.

"We've mentioned this so many times now, it doesn't matter when you get to provincials what your record is, everybody is 0-0."

Hofmann speaks first hand about the clean slate at the provincial tournament. They were upset last year and missed the playoffs due to the tie-breaking format. He says they need to simply avoid putting themselves back in that spot.

"Just win all our games," he laughed. "It's pretty simple, don't get yourself into that situation. Last year we were looking fine until we had a couple bad innings in one game, we need to avoid that this year."

The Sox will meet the Regina Expos to open the tournament at 3 o'clock Thursday. Friday morning they face the Northwest Pirates at 9 o'clock. Saturday they battle the Regina Athletics and the Saskatoon Diamondbacks to close the round robin portion.

The playoffs will take place Sunday beginning with potential tie-breakers at 9 o'clock.

Hofmann adds that this is the best time of year for his ball players.

"For sure it is, it's exciting for all of them. it's the best time of year for baseball in our province."

If the Red Sox do make the final, 107.5 Bolt FM will broadcast the game with a tentative start of 2:50 Sunday afternoon.
