The Canada Summer Games got underway this weekend in Winnipeg.

One of the athletes, Molly Yungmann from St. Gregor, tells us a little about the event she is competing in.

"The heptathlon has seven events. They are done throughout two days, at the end you get total points and that's how the standings are. The first day is 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put, and you finish off the day with a 200m. Day two has long jump, javelin, and 800m."

She will run the 400m hurdles on Monday, The Heptathlon gets underway on next Thursday.

Yungmann goes on to tell us how she prepares for the event.

"To prepare for the competition is how I prepare for any indoor competition. I have been practising for five days a week since I started in the fall. We also go lift weights three days a week too. Leading up to this competition is really focusing on making sure everything is technically correct and that we are mentally ready."

Joining Yungmann in athletics is Alyson Edwards from Strasbourg and Payne Wylie from Elstow. Other local athletes include Logan Hofmann, Brody Frerichs, Jayden Huls, Rylan Marianchuk, and Tyler McWillie for baseball, and Travis Walls playing volleyball.

The games run from July 28 to August 13
