As the leaves start to fall, and temperatures steadily cool, winter sports are set to take over during the next few weeks.

On Monday, the Humboldt Curling Club is set to begin league play, with seniors, as well as the return of the fun league, which has become the club's most popular league.

"Our biggest league is the fun league now," remarked ice maker Kevin Kalthoff. "It's just six or eight end games, whatever the team wants to play. It's very casual, everybody wants a night out, and they get it. They can curl either Monday or Tuesday, and it goes from 7:15 until 9:00."

On Tuesday and Thursday after school, youth leagues take over the rink, with Grades 7-9 competing on Tuesday, and 10-12 on Thursday. Wednesday afternoon sees continuation of the senior league, with the ladies cash league taking the spotlight on Wednesday nights. Thursday nights is booked for the men's league, with Friday afternoons being turned to the senior cash league.

Kalthoff had great words to see as well about Brian Wempe, who spends time on Monday's after school with students looking to learn more, and develop their curling skills.

"He runs that league, and has really resurrected it. He's just doing a fantastic job with it," Kalthoff continued. "We have about ten people out here trying to teach these kids, and we don't charge for it. It's right after school on Monday, and the kids learn all the fundamentals and everything."

Last year, around 70 students participated in developing their skills through the offering.

The club is under new management for the 2015-16 season with Bev Kaip taking over. Through the years, Humboldt has seen many big tournaments be played either inside the HCC, or the Elgar Petersen Arena due to the work from the club.

Kalthoff says that will once again be the case for this year.

"The 8th to the 10th of January, we have the Sask Men's Curling Tour Championship. That will be a big event. All the best men's teams in Saskatchewan will be here."

He added that the following weekend, the Ladies Last Chance bonspiel will be held at the club, which will also feature the top teams throughout the province.

After hosting the provincial junior championships last year, Kalthoff stated that CurlSask is looking to bring the SaskTel Tankard to Humboldt for 2017, and he is hopeful that it can be finalized.

This year, the tankard will be held in Kindersley.
