The Humboldt Broncos bounced back with a strong defensive performance on Saturday to split their weekend road trip, defeating the Estevan Bruins 2-1 in overtime.

It was a rare defensive battle for a Bruins team that is used to putting pucks in the net, but the Broncos were able to keep their offence at bay in skating to the win.

Head Coach Darcy Haugan said that a late Bruins goal in the first period carried over to the second, but goaltender Parker Tobin stood tall.

"In that second period, Estevan really took it to us, but Parker kept us in the game."

Tobin stopped 23 shots in securing his third win as a member of the Broncos.

Haugan says that his team came out strong in the third period, making right on some plays that weren't handled as well in the middle frame.

"We just got away from what we want to do. When pucks were dumped in we were just making wrong decisions. So we told them if we just tightened up and used a lot of five foot chips, we felt we would come out with more ease."

The Broncos held Estevan to just four shots over the final 20 minutes of regulation.

Offensively, Humboldt came out firing as well, with Logan Hunter tying the game up 1-1 just 33 seconds into the period on a powerplay marker.

After the final 19:27 of regulation went without a goal on either side, overtime would be where the game ended.

Humboldt had a chance on the power play to end the game, however, 23 seconds into the man advantage, the Broncos found themselves in the box.

Just as the Bruins penalty was expiring, Logan Schatz and Jaxon Joseph flew into the Estevan zone, with Schatz feeding Joseph for the game-winning goal.

Haugan says that it was good to see Joseph's work pay off with the winner.

"He works tirelessly, and we're very happy to have him here. He is a good teammate and a good person, so it was great to see him rewarded."

The goal was officially scored shorthanded, giving the Broncos their first win in Estevan since a 2-0 win on February 7, 2015.

The Broncos now get set for a big weekend in the division, as they have a home and home with the Notre Dame Hounds.

Notre Dame is currently one point ahead of the Broncos in the standings, albeit with a pair of games in hand.

It will be the first time the two teams have met since the season-opening home and home, which the Broncos swept.

Friday's game is in Wilcox, while the Broncos host Notre Dame on Saturday night.
