As the curling season winds down for another year, one team is still awaiting the conclusion of its story.

The Aaron Gaudreau rink of Humboldt consists of skip Gaudreau, third Jason Schlachter, second Tom Johnsson,  and lead Joel MacDonald. The foursome topped the provincial ranks of club curlers with an impressive spiel in Melfort from March 22-25. However, the squad will have the summer to contemplate the next step in their climb, the national club competition which will be held in late November 2019.

The provincial win has been a few years in the making according to third Jason Schlachter. The foursome has been to five provincial competitions and in the final draw of three. This year was their first win.

Schlachter lays out this year's run, "We had a four and one record in the round robin which we were very happy with. We played pretty well which got us second in our pool with no tiebreakers. In the end, we played a local Melfort team. It was a great game with great shot making by both teams." Schlachter is pleased that their persistence has paid off.

The season end comes with a bit of a change of the guard for next year. Lead Joel MacDonald is heading out from Humboldt which will leave Gaudreau's team with a bit of a personnel quandary for next year. However, MacDonald will join the Humboldt crew one last time for the national competition in November. Schlachter says, "We're looking to have a good send off for Joel, but we'll get together again in November."

The location for the club curler national championship has yet to be determined, but the foursome is geared up for a voyage no matter where. In the meantime, they have some time booked with CurlSask's High-Performance Director, Pat Simmons, to tune up on the strategy and technique.  For now, they are just content to be the Saskatchewan reps. As Schlachter says, "It was a dream of ours to have those jackets on our backs."

Now it's just a few more months until the end of their story is written.
