It's an opportunity to learn the game of soccer, as the Humboldt and District Soccer Association is holding a Learn to Play clinic Sunday.

There will be three sessions throughout the day, as well as a barbecue lunch and an open scrimmage.

Jesse Schwartz, one of the organization's directors, says it is an opportunity for kids to test the sport out.

"We're just trying to get as many kids in the area to come out and try the game of soccer," he said. "We got a lot of volunteers coming to help out, and we'll have some older kids doing demonstrations. It is just having some fun playing soccer and creating awareness that Humboldt soccer exists in the area."

The event, which is free to attend, will begin at 10:30am with those born from 2010 to 2013 taking part. At 12:30pm, the 2008 and 2009 kids have their session, with those born between 2004 and 2007 eligible at 2:30pm.

An open scrimmage will follow at 4:00pm.

Schwartz adds that it doesn't matter where you live, they will welcome anyone interested.

"It's open to anyone in the area. Humboldt soccer is part of the prairie central," he noted. "We can take anyone from Lake Lenore to Anaheim, Watson, Raymore, it doesn't matter, there is no real boundary to it."

The game has brought steady interest to Humboldt over the past years, and Schwartz says it is also growing across the region.

"There is a lot more interest from the surrounding areas since I've been involved. We see a lot of kids registering from outside the area. We've also been in contact with Lanigan, Wynyard, Watrous, who are starting to develop stronger programs. Soccer in the general area is growing."

Sunday's event will also serve as a bridge to the new season for those who have yet to register their kids for the year.

"We're gonna start first week in May with games. We wanted to get this in before games actually started," he explained. "We don't ever refuse anybody the opportunity to register, we'll find a way to get them in, but ideally if you register before the beginning of May you will get the best bang for your buck."
