The AA Midget Humboldt Broncos have a new head coach.

After three years behind the bench Chris Hamilton is stepping down to spend more time with his own kids' hockey so his assistant is going to step up.

Three year Bronco Rhett Blackmur will take the team over after a year of being the teams' associate coach.

"It's good they gave me this opportunity, overall I'm very excited for it," the 23 year-old Saskatoon product said Monday afternoon.

The rugged utility man played both defence and forward for Dean Brockman and has called Humboldt home since 2011. He played over 150 games with the Broncos helping them claim an Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League and Anavet Cup championship in 2012.

He says he's looking forward to taking over from Hamilton as coaching is something he pictured himself doing.

"I definitely thought I would get into it at some point in my life. I didn't realize it would be this soon but Chris gave me the opportunity early this year. I just went with it and enjoyed it all year."

The Broncos ended up falling in the Centre Hockey League semi-final against the Saskatoon Riverkings.

Blackmur, who has worked at Discovery Ford since his playing days admits elevating his resume and getting back to the junior 'A" level isn't out of the question.

"Yeah, it's always a thought in the back of mind to keep going but again I think that's a long ways out. I enjoy what I am doing at the moment so I will just stick with it."

He recently ran a couple "spring" ice sessions the team had prior to the Elgar Petersen Arena ice being melted away for another season.
