It was a pool full of medals for the Humboldt Hammerheads at their annual swim meet.

The Humboldt Hammerheads hosted their Annual Swim Meet on Saturday, June 15th at the Humboldt Aquatic Center and throughout the event came away with 16 medals.

"Humboldt did very well. We had 66 competitive swimmers from our team. That was the largest group that was here, which quite often happens at your home meet. Our swimmers all were fantastic. We had swimmers swim races that they had never tried before and did well, so now we have a base time to base improvements off of. We had swimmers who had never swum in a competition before. At 7 years old when you've never done this before, it's overwhelming, just getting into the water, that's a win right there. We had swimmers who took chunks of time of their previous personal best, which is great to see, and we had a number of swimmers that came away with medals," said Head Coach Leisl Lefebvre.

The Annual Swim Meet is one of the first chances in a competitive atmosphere the swimmers have to evaluate their progress learned since the season started on May 1st.

"It's traditionally a sprint meet. A lot of the clubs that have outdoor pools have only been in the water for a couple of weeks, so you don't want them doing the really long races. The longest race that's performed in a sprint meet is 100m, and thats four laps. The shortest race is 25m, which is just one lap, and some of those go really, really fast. Once you start to get into the older swimmers with the freestyle stroke you're looking at about 12 seconds."

The aggregate medals are awarded in each age group to the three swimmers who accumulated the most points through the meet's races. Humboldt came away with 16 aggregate medals, including 4 gold, 6 silver, and 6 bronze.   The Watrous Whitecaps, one of Humboldt competitors, has 11 swimmers participate and swam away with 2 gold and 1 silver medal.
