The HCI Mohawks put an early deficit behind them on Friday afternoon, paving their way to the provincial playoffs with a 31-14 win over the Churchill Chargers of La Ronge.

"It sounds pretty incredible to me. What a story in our season here, and the growth in our kids is amazing," noted Head Coach Cory Popoff. "They knew that they needed this win pretty badly and they came out and got it, so it is good for them."

Although the end result told a different story, it was the visitors who found the scoreboard first, scoring on their opening offensive series after converting on a pair of second down situations.

Following some first quarter mistakes offensively, the Mohawks pushed back in the second quarter, when running back Dawson Hering found the endzone for his first of four touchdowns on the afternoon.

Hering would add his second house call just minutes later to give Humboldt a 14-7 lead, which they would take into halftime.

The Grade 11's third trip to the endzone came in the third quarter, as he showed off his ability at the position, cutting back upfield before hitting the edge and finding room down the sideline to outrun the defence.

La Ronge brought the game back to within one score early in the fourth quarter on a penalty-aided drive before Hering helped the Mohawks regain the two touchdown edge.

Cole Grace added a field goal late to effectively put the game out of reach with a three score lead.

Following the game, Hering said that contributing in the way he did to the team's win was rewarding.

"It feels pretty good," he said. "I actually skipped hockey practice last night so I could prepare and get a good sleep for the game."

With the win, the Mohawks enter the provincial playoff bracket, which will see them visit Esterhazy on October 28.

Hering says that they want to keep rolling.

"We're just going to keep doing what we are doing, practicing hard, and put ourselves in the best position to get another win."

Popoff agreed, noting that there are still some things for them to correct ahead of the quarterfinal matchup.

"It's still play execution. We are still struggling at times, but we are way further ahead than when we were," he said. "We're going to have a hard week of practice and we will be ready to compete on Saturday."

During halftime, the Mohawks had the official grand opening for the Conexus Community Tower, which sits on the west side of Glenn Hall Park.
