The Humboldt Mohawks Girls Basketball played their third game of the season Saturday, at HCI, against the Melfort Comets. Head Coach, Kerri Archibald, says she's pleased with the girls' effort, despite the 51-24 loss to Melfort.

"That was probably the best they've played all year. I was really happy with our defensive effort for most of the time. The offense was a struggle but that usually comes throughout the season, so I'm not too worried about it at this point," Archibald says.

The Mohawk girls played a winning exhibition game last Tuesday against Birch Hills and beat Meadow Lake Friday evening. Archibald says she has high hopes for the team this year.

"They were last year's provincial champions and might be again this year."

The team battled the Melfort Comets Saturday but came in strong with a solid defensive strategy. Archibald says their competition Saturday was tough, but the girls played well.

"We knew that Melfort would have a fairly aggressive press and I was really happy that our girls were able to break the press so well."

The Humboldt Mohawks Girls' Basketball will play in Saturday night's bronze medal game. They are visiting Foam Lake on December 15th and 16th and will participate in an Alumni Game, along with the Boys' team on the 17th.

Tournaments in January, February, and March will follow.

This basketball tournament was re-named The Kevin Grieman Memorial Tournament, in honour of Archibald's former late coach. Grieman's wife will be presenting the final trophy at Saturday night's game.
