It was a return to competition for the Humboldt Hammerheads Swim Team on Saturday.

After seven weeks of practice, they got in the pool to compete for medals in Rosetown.

"There were 85 swimmers at the meet, which is pretty good for the first one of the year," said Head Coach Leisl Lefebvre on how the meet went.. "The results are quite often hit and miss. You have really young swimmers who are in their first or second year swimming, and they're going to take either huge chunks of time off, or something goes wrong at the start."

"We had a little bit of both on Saturday. We had some swimmers who were taking 12 and 13 seconds off a 50-metre race," she continued. "They've grown, they've developed, they've gotten stronger and have taken huge amounts of time off. Then you have some of our senior swimmers, whose strokes are already at peak efficiency."

In total, the Hammerheads collected six medals.

"We had two gold, two silver and two bronze," explained Lefebvre. "There were a couple surprises. There were a couple swimmers who were surprised that they did as well as they did."

Michael Carnago and Tessa Cannon picked up the gold medals. Lauryn MacLean and Garrett Brown secured silver, while Sabrina MacLean and Dallin Fraser earned bronze medals.

The Hammerheads will have the weekend of June 25 off before they head south for the next competition.

"Our next two swim meets are in the south. Swift Current is hosting the meets at their facility for both the Swift Current team and the Gravelbourg team on the 2nd and 3rd of July."

While they don't host a swim meet during the season, on July 23, the Hammerheads will host northern Saskatchewan for provincial semi-finals.
