The PJHL Delisle Chiefs and the SJHL's Humboldt Broncos have a close relationship -- both personally and when it comes to business.

The Chiefs are a farm team for the Broncos. For the last few years, players have been called up or sent down between the two organizations. On top of that, the players know each other through past experiences and playing together in junior.

When the news broke out about a charter bus carrying the Broncos and other personnel being involved in a severe accident just north of Tisdale, it was a sinking moment for players and staff from the Chiefs.

General Manager Ryan Marushak remembers receiving the news about the accident that night, while the players were preparing for Game 4 of the PJHL President's Cup Final versus the Regina Capitals.

The players and coaching staff were all in the dressing room getting set for warm ups and game time, until Humboldt-born players Blake Berschiminsky and Reagan Poncelet read the dreadful news over their phones.

The horrific event struck a chord within everyone who makes up the Junior B Delisle Chiefs. Game 4 was postponed and the Chiefs have been mourning the friends they lost.

"Every player knows somebody on that bus from that evening," said Marushak. "We are trying to be Humboldt Strong. We know what everyone is going through there and how strong they are and we want to continue to fight for the guys who lost their lives."

Jacob Leicht, who died in the crash, was born in 1999 and raised in Humboldt. Leicht was a member of the Chiefs for a brief period before the Humboldt Broncos brought him up to play with them this season.

"He signed his card with us, knowing he had a chance to make junior A, but he wanted to play for the Delisle Chiefs if that wasn't going to work out," said Marushak, who spoke about the impact of him and the other players passing away amongst the players.

"It's been a touching past four days that have been hard to get through."

Other Humboldt locals who have survived the crash but are recovering from the crash include Jacob Wasserman and Morgan Gobeil, with the latter recovering from critical injuries.

The Chiefs will play Game 4 tonight at the Delisle Arena as they resume the final against Regina.

The Chiefs gave their players commemorative stickers that they will sport in honour of those affected by the incident from this past weekend.

People attending tonight's game are asked to arrive at the Delisle Arena early for a pre-game tribute to the Broncos which will include a moment of silence.

Proceeds from tonight's gate admission, 50/50 sales and donations received from a box set up near the front of the rink will all be donated to the organization.
