Humboldt Broncos Head Coach & General Manager Darcy Haugan says Wednesday night's 4-1 win over the Melfort Mustangs was "part of the process."

The victory comes with a much more veteran line-up as opposed to a 3-2 loss Tuesday night in Nipawin with a rookie filled roster.

The Broncos played all nine returnees from last year's club, 20 year-old newcomer Connor Kortko also dressed for his first game with the Broncos.

"We haven't actually really had a full practice with our vets," Haugan said following his first win behind the Humboldt bench. "Just because of the way camp has gone and with the game Tuesday night with all our rookies. I am just proud of the way they played and they played hard, they competed and that's what we're looking for. We're just correcting things as we go and we will peck away at what we need to accomplish."

The Mustangs dressed a good number of their veteran players as well, seven 20 year-olds suited up for the reigning Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League champions but it was a Humboldt rookie taking over in the first. Lethbridge's Andrew Thompson scored twice for the visitors.

Haugan admits the 1997 born forward has caught his eye.

"He does a lot of things well, he plays a very quiet and unassuming game but he does a lot of things right. He earned my trust fairly early in camp and even that green and gold game he looked like he was ready for the next level."

Another 1997 hopeful, Rock Ruschkowski scored along with third year defenceman Connor Swystun.

Brett Clark, a 20 year-old netminder from Grande Prairie, Alberta stopped 22/23 shots for the win.

Humboldt now gets set for a three games in three days weekend starting Friday at the Elgar Petersen Arena. North Battleford is here for a 7:30 start, the Stars host the Broncos Saturday. That game will be on 107.5 Bolt FM KMK Sales Ltd. Broncos' Hockey. The pre-game show begins 15 minutes ahead of puck drop.

Sunday they return to the EPA for a 6 o'clock game versus Melfort to conclude the pre-season.

Haugan says they will likely make some moves but there is still roster spots available as well.

"We will probably have to get down a little bit here just regarding our billet situation but all in all we don't want to send somebody into three in three nights right off the get go. It is what it is and we will play guys, we will continue to mold and make them into the Bronco team that we want."

The Broncos will have extended hours Thursday for season ticket purchases and pick-up. If you buy your ticket before the end of the day, which will be 8pm, you will get free admission into the two home exhibition games. The office is open 10-4 but will reopen at 6 o'clock.
