The Humboldt Broncos were seeking a better start on Tuesday afternoon, as they wrapped up the SJHL Showcase in Saskatoon.

Head Coach Darcy Haugan said that a sluggish start was a contributing factor to their previous loss to the Nipawin Hawks, and was hoping to see a better first period from his club.

While the Broncos didn't score a goal in the first 20 minutes, neither did their opponents from Yorkton.

The second period, however, saw the Broncos come out hot, with Cole Young scoring his first goal of the season on a redirection infront of the Terriers net.

Just over two minutes later, the designated visitors in the game took a 2-0 lead when Brayden Camrud found the back of the net for his second goal of the season.

The Terriers, who have struggled to score goals early in the season had their chances kept relatively quiet throughout the game, with their lone goal coming in the game's final minute after pulling goaltender Logan Bateman.

Humboldt was able to hold off the Terriers in the final minute to skate away with a 2-1 win, earning their fourth victory of the season.

Broncos starter Jacob Wassermann had a fine afternoon between the pipes, stopping 22 of 23 shots faced.

Having played six games in 11 days to start the season, the Broncos will take a full week off before a return to the ice, with their next context coming Tuesday, October 3 in North Battleford.

The Broncos next action at the Elgar Petersen Arena is Friday, October 6 when they welcome Nipawin.

Tuesday's Showcase game in Saskatoon was also the first game for newcomer Ryan Straschnitzki, who was acquired from the Whitecourt Wolverines as the final part of a futures deal for forward Morgan Messenger in 2016.

The 18-year-old blueliner was someone Haugan spotted at the 2017 Telus Cup in BC, when he was playing for Leduc.

"Very calm, poised, makes good decisions with the puck. He really has a great hockey sense," said Haugan. "His puck distribution is good, first pass is good, and I think he will really help us."

Straschnitzki played in three games for the Wolverines this season before being moved to the Broncos.

His acquisition wraps up a series of trades for the Broncos, which started in the 2015-16 season.

The Broncos dealt defenceman Greg Moro to the Lloydminster Bobcats in exchange for Graydon Smith and Messenger.

Smith was moved to Sherwood Park for 20-year-old forward Luke Kempf, who played one season with the Broncos last year.

Messenger was then sent to the Wolverines for Stephen Wack and future considerations, which turned into goalie Sam-Jaxon Visscher and Straschnitzki.
