The Humboldt Broncos are another step closer to dropping the puck on a new season.

Training camp concluded on Saturday night with the Elgar Petersen Cup Top 40 game.

Throughout the three day camp, Head Coach Darcy Haugan says they were encouraged by what they saw.

"We feel like we're a pretty quick team up front and are going to have some tough choices there. The back end, we have some returning guys and the guys battling it out for other spots, there is some good competition happening," he noted. "All in all, it's a start, but we know there is a lot of work ahead of us."

One area where the Broncos know they will have a new look is between the pipes. Both goaltenders from last season have moved on.

Haugan says that the goalies still around will need to get in some game work to really show their ability.

"It's a little bit tougher for the goalies at camps just because they don't get a lot of work in," he said. "We'll be giving them an opportunity over the next week here to really hone their skills and get up to speed with life in the SJ."

The Broncos acquired 18-year-old Sam-Jaxon Visscher in June. He was the "futures" part of a June 2016 deal that sent forward Morgan Messenger to Alberta's Whitecourt Wolverines.

Other goalies in Saturday's Top 40 game were Isaac Labelle, Rayce Ramsay and Calum Humble. Labelle's rights were acquired in 2015, while Ramsay was a Broncos draft pick in 2016.

A four game preseason schedule begins on Tuesday night for the Broncos, where they will send out a younger squad, according to Haugan.

"We're going to try and get as many as our 16-year-olds in the lineup as we can, as well as some other guys who are trying out," he explained. "We're not sure what Battleford will be dressing, but from our point, we wanted to give them a taste of Junior A hockey."

Haugan says that for their remaining preseason games, they will look to finalize spots for the club's regular season opener on September 16.

The Broncos host the North Stars in a rematch on Wednesday and welcome Melfort Friday night. The final tune-up game is Saturday in Melfort.
