The Humboldt Broncos began the playoffs series with the Melfort Mustangs on a victorious note.

The Broncos travelled to Melfort for Game 1 of the Bourgault Cup Friday.

The first period saw Jaxon Joseph earn the first goal six minutes in, with assists from Nick Shumlanski and Bryce Fiske, following the first goal of the game by the Mustangs.
Humboldt took the lead later in the period, with Logan Schatz scoring the third goal of the game, with assists from Fiske and Conner Lukan.

Joseph added to Humboldt's lead less than a minute into the second period, with assists from Logan Boulet and Shumlanski. After seven and a half minutes of play, Jacob Leicht made his contribution to the Broncos' lead.

The third period's first goal was once again earned by the Broncos, with Shumlanski extending the lead to 4. The final goal was scored by Brayden Camrud early in the third.

The Broncos won the first game in the Bourgault Cup, with Friday's 7-2 final score.

However, the Mustangs came back swinging Saturday, with their 6-3 win. They scored twice in the first period.

Camrud earned the first goal of the second period, with assists from Lukan and Schatz. Melfort scored following that, and Joseph scored the Broncos second goal of the game, six minutes into the period.

Seven minutes of play went by in the third before Melfort scored, adding to their lead once again. Joseph retaliated with his second goal of the game, however, Melfort added a pair of goals to their lead as the third wrapped up.

The Mustangs skated away with the win, splitting the series.
