Following a successful first season in the Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League, the Triple-A Midget Muenster Red Sox are hoping for an even better follow-up.

After a first place finish through the regular season, the Red Sox went 3-1 in the round robin at the provincial championships, but based on the playoff format, they actually missed the playoffs, ending their season.

Logan Hofmann, a returning player for the team, says it was a tough way to end the year.

"I won't forget it ever. After watching the game that we needed the one team to win, and they didn't, and we found out we went 3-1 in the round robin and were out of provincials, it was sad."

As it is with minor sports, players are restricted to age limits, and this year, the Red Sox will be moving on without four players from last year's team, including Nick Anderson, who committed to Marygrove College in Michigan last May.

Other graduating players were Carter Frerichs, Devin Hinz, and Chet Bornhorst.

Hofmann's dad, Chad, is the team's Head Coach. He says that although there was some turnover, the new players coming in will make an impact, but the older players will be relied on for their experience.

"Basically, with how tough the league is, there is no easy teams. We do have six last year players, six second year guys, and two first year guys, so hopefully the older guys can lead the way."

New to the roster this year will be Mitchell McGrath and Shane Gerwing, who played for the Double-A Midget Humboldt Dodgers last year. First-year players will be Rylan Marianchuk and Tyler McWillie, both of whom played for the provincial champion Bantam Dodgers.

Joining Logan as returning players are Jordan Breker, Jayden Engele, Brody Frerichs, Adam Gerwing, David Lacoursiere, Thomas Lessmeister, Parker McRae, Bryce Rueve, and Kalvin Rueve.

The Red Sox will open the season on the road Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader against last year's provincial finalists out of Lloydminster, the Northwest Pirates.

Logan says they are hoping to finish the job from last season.

"It's gonna be awesome, I can't wait for the season. Hopefully we can do just as good as last year and at provincials play as good and hopefully luck is on our side this year."

The Pirates will visit Jubilee Field in Muenster for the Red Sox home opener on Sunday, May 15.
