Stanley Olson
September 10, 1929 – January 15, 2016

The death of Mr. Stanley Winford Oscar Olson, 86 years, of Sturgis occurred on Friday, January 15, 2016 at the Preeceville & District Health Center, Long Term Care.  Stanley was born on September 10, 1929 at home on the farm north of Sturgis to Oscar and Winnifred (nee Wright) Olson.  He grew up on the farm, attending Kopje School for grades 1 – 8.  He took grade 9 by correspondence and then grades 10 – 12 at Sturgis.  His father died when he was 11 so he was instantly the man of the farm and along with his mom and five sisters, kept the farm going.  Stanley attended the University of Saskatchewan for two years obtaining a Vocational Agriculture Diploma, and then returned home to continue farming.  In 1960/61 he became interested in flying and worked to obtain his pilot’s license.  He had his pilot’s license for over 40 years, flying for the last time at age 75.  Although he mainly flew for the pure enjoyment of being in the air, he did fly the parachutists for Sturgis’ July 1st Sport and Rodeo for a few years.  Throughout the years, Stanley owned three different planes.  In 1965, Stanley won the Nuffield Scholarship, which was awarded annually to two Canadians, one from Eastern Canada and one from Western Canada.  He spent 6 months in England, touring six other countries as well and learning about new innovations in agriculture.  It was during this trip that he met his future wife, Anne Hogben.  He returned to England that fall for a visit and she visited him in Canada the following spring.  Anne moved to Canada in January of 1967 and they were married that July.  They continued to operate a mixed farming operation, with cattle being his main focus.  He taught all of his children to drive the tractor and the truck and they all worked alongside him in the day to day operation of the farm.  He was always forward thinking and taught all of his children that they could do anything they put their mind to.  Stanley endeavored to take Sunday off from work for a family day and often this meant driving around the country, exploring Saskatchewan.  The family attended many different airshows in Saskatchewan and at times travelled to neighboring provinces as well.  Over the years, Stanley was secretary of the UGG for more than 40 years, involved in the start up of the Gateway Coop and secretary of the Snow Plow Club.   In 2012, Stanley and Anne moved off the farm and in to Sturgis.  Needing further care, in 2015, he went in to Long Term Care.  Stanley will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 48 years, Anne Olson of Sturgis; their four children and one grandson:  Frances Olson of Pelly, Hilary (Steven) Brunsch of Saskatoon, Kendall (Marie Anne) Olson of Edmonton and his son Jeremy, and Jacquie Olson of Sturgis; three sisters: Emily Fagervold, Myrtle Yaremchuk and Pearl Karcha, all of Preeceville; and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his parents, Oscar and Winnifred Olson; two sisters, Lily (John) Hamilton and Nellie (Alver) Christopherson; two brothers in childhood, Winford and James; brothers-in-law: John Karcha, Jim Yaremchuk and Rudy Fagervold; and a special uncle, Fred Wright.  The Funeral Service for Stanley was held on Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Grace United Church, Sturgis, officiated by Rev. Miles Russell.  Memorial donations in Stanley’s memory may be made to the Preeceville & District Health Center, Long Term Care or University of Saskatchewan, College of Agriculture & Bioresources.
