Mrs. Veranie Zilkowsky
June 26, 1923 - April 24, 2016

The peaceful death of Mrs. Veranie “Vernie” Pauline Zilkowsky 92 years of Quill Plains Centennial Lodge Watson occurred on Sunday, April 24, 2016 at her residence.  Vernie was born on June 26, 1923 to Albinus and Elizabeth (nee Zerff) German in Humboldt.  She obtained her education at the Valley View School.  As many women of her era she did domestic jobs in the area and at home helping her mother.  On December 29, 1942 she married John Zilkowsky at Immaculate Conception Church.   They began their life on a farm in the Carmel district and they were blessed with three children. At the age of 29 she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and fought a very hard battle with cobalt treatments and the power of prayer.  This and her feisty personality is probably why she was able to beat the disease and live a very long and healthy life.  She was very hard working woman who spent hours in her yard.  Vernie’s flowers accented her manicured yard. She also had large vegetable gardens that she made sure the family could enjoy fresh produce and fruit year round, especially her home made apple pies with apples from her tree that generously provided buckets of apples yearly.  Vernie was a very meticulous lady who took pride in everything she did; if it was baking a cake or ironing linens at the church, everything was done to perfection.  In 1980 John and Vernie moved to Humboldt; she loved their home in town and continued to beautify her yard.  Vernie was employed at the local Robinson Store and Saan Store for many years.  She loved to be busy and surrounded by people.   She made many trips to B.C. to visit her family and share vacations with them.  She loved to attend her grandchildren’s functions and made sure she didn’t miss anyone or any event.  Vernie was very faithful to her faith and helping at the church.  In 2010 due to failing health Vernie had to move to Bethany in Middle Lake and then later to Quill Plains Centennial Lodge in Watson until her passing.  Vernie was a very caring loving person who kept busy, continually doing something. Her high energy and love for life will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her two daughters: Delphine Pruden of Prince George, BC and Myra Sydoruk of Sylvian Lake, AB and eight grandchildren: Terry (Janice) Zilkowsky of Cochrane, AB, Darcy Stafford of Prince George, BC, Rene (Al) Van der Wolfe of Spruce Grove, AB, Wendy (Darren) Borstmayer of St. Brieux, Dana Sydoruk of Sylvian Lake, AB, Jeff (Wendy) Sydoruk of Lloydminster, SK, Raeanne (Jayson) Pruden of Vancouver and Dennis Pruden of Prince George, BC; 12 great grandchildren and by daughter-in-law  Dorothy Engele of Humboldt.  Vernie was predeceased by her husband John in 1990; son Raymond in 1968 and son-in-law Jim Pruden.  A Prayer Service was held on Thursday, April 28, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. from Malinoski & Danyluik Funeral Home and a Graveside Service was held on Friday, April 29, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. from Our Lady Of Mount Carmel R.C. Cemetery, Carmel, SK celebrated by Fr. Ephraim Mensah.  Memorial donations in Vernie’s memory may be directed to Canadian Cancer Society.
