Metro Melnychuk

April 29, 1925 – January 8, 2017

The death of Metro Melnychuk, 91 years of Sturgis, occurred on January 8, 2017 at Preeceville Health Center. Metro was born on April 29, 1925 at home on the family farm in the Sturgis District to Bill and Mary (nee Fincaryk) Melnychuk. As a boy he attended the country schools at Koval & East Ajax and then began helping out on the farm. At various times in his life Metro worked in the bush as a logger in B.C., Alberta and Ontario. Eventually Metro took over the farm that he ran until his retirement. He married Verna Kurulak on July 15, 1960 and together they raised five children. Metro’s other interests were fishing, hunting and gardening. He especially enjoyed family get togethers and special occasions with all of his children and their families. In 2002 they moved to Sturgis but still made daily trips out to the farm. Metro will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife of 56 years Verna of Sturgis; their four children, 11 grandchildren and six great grandchildren: Rod Melnychuk (Clara Tomkow) of Regina and family Marie-Lynn (Derek) Starnes and daughter McKynlee of Slave Lake, AB, and Jesse (Miranda) Melnychuk of Jasper, AB; Sherry (Miles) Rakochy of Sturgis and family Crystal (Tim) Palmer and children Luke and Kaden of Saskatoon, Chris Rakochy (fiancée Stephanie Flagel) and children Amy and Jordyn of Sturgis and Sarah Rakochy (Taylor McTaggart) and daughter Brealyn of Saskatoon; Darcy (Shawna) Melnychuk and family Blake and Kenzie of Saskatoon; and Stacey (Stacy) Melnychuk and family Nicolas, Asher, Jaxon and Finley of Whitecourt, AB; four sisters: Diane Rodgers of Scarborough, ON, Eva Gill of USA, Molly Kelton of Port Coquitlam, BC, and Rose Mintenko of Yorkton; one brother Jimmy (Rose) Melnychuk of Williams Lake BC; and numerous nieces and nephews. Metro was predeceased by his parents Bill and Mary Melnychuk; son Brent Melnychuk; grandson Andrew Rakochy; three brothers and four sisters: Mike Melnychuk, Gena Denesuik, Lena Melenchuk, Katie Boychuk, Leo Melnychuk, Billie Melnychuk (in infancy) and Victoria Bauder. The Funeral Service for Metro was held on Friday, January 13, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Grace United Church, Sturgis officiated by Rev. Miles Russell. Interment followed in Sturgis Cemetery. Memorial donations in Metro’s memory may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan and Sturgis Cemetery.
