Mavis Halyk
June 14, 1950 – March 30, 2016

It is with great sadness that the family announces the sudden and unexpected death of Mavis Eileen (nee Pekar) Halyk 65 years of Humboldt on Wednesday March 30, 2016 at Humboldt District Hospital.  Mavis was born at Yorkton on June 14, 1950 to Gordon and Mary Ellen (Nellie) (nee Griffith) Pekar.  She obtained all of her education at Melville.  Following her schooling she began working at the Siers Department Store in the ladies department at Melville.  On April 22, 1971 she married the love of her life Rodney Halyk at Melville whom she knew from school when he was a bus driver. Rodney’s job as an engineer took them to Thompson, MB, Weyburn, Shaunavon and then finally Humboldt.  It was in Shaunavon that Mavis began her career as a bank teller with CIBC.  While in Humboldt she transferred over to TASKO at the grass roots with Darryl and Tim in the administration department.  Mavis loved people and spending time visiting and having fun.  She was an exceptionally great cook, if you had a meal that Mavis prepared you wouldn’t forget it.  She loved collecting recipes and was always adventurous in trying new tasty dishes with her family and friends.  Mavis also had a passion to garden and spent hours out in her beautiful manicured garden.   She was a very organized woman; everything was always neat and in order.  Mavis, Rod and the boys spent the summers camping with her best friend her sister Joanne and her family and shared many memories at many lakes in Saskatchewan. She surrounded herself with her family at all times; her sister’s family and the Halyk family meant the world to her she loved them all very much and enjoy the times they had together.  The highlight of Mavis’s life was when she became a grandmother; she took pride in that role and loved to spend time with them.  They brought much light and love to her.  In June 2015 Mavis retired in hope that she would be able to enjoy many years of camping at will without deadlines.  Unfortunately Mavis and Rod only had one summer under those conditions, so the summer of 2015 was spent traveling around to many different lakes in the province camping and having fun without deadlines.   Mavis’ fun lovingly personality and loving caring manner will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her husband of 44 years Rodney Halyk of Humboldt; two sons and three grandchildren: Brent (Deanna) Halyk of Calgary and children Brooklyn, Logan and Gavin and Kirk (Lora) Halyk of Kamloops; one sister Joanne (Al) Schatz of Melville and their family Wendy (Anthony) Leeds of Moosomin and their children Denham and Rowan and Warren Schatz (Hannah) of Calgary; two brother-in-laws: Bruce (Carol) Halyk and their family Dodi (Darren) Novak and son Mason all of Regina, Dean Halyk of Calgary; Garry (Terri) Halyk of Meville and family Joanna Halyk of Regina, Garett Halyk and Kyle Halyk both of Melville.  Mavis was predeceased by her parents Gordon and Nellie Pekar; and parents-in-law Joseph and Stella (nee Wilkie) Halyk.  As per Mavis’s wishes a Funeral Service will not be held.  Memorial donations in Mavis’s memory may be directed to Saskatchewan Cancer Agency.
